Purpose of the Wiki
Welcome to SW3 Supporting Student Achievement Wiki. The purpose of this wiki is:
- to become more familiar with and to celebrate our students' learning in Literacy and Numeracy
- to help parents better understand how teachers are currently delivering curriculum to meet the challenges of 21st century learning
- to provide parent with a few key, relevant resources pertaining to student learning and achievement
What We Are Working On in SW3
Literacy
Math
Teachers who provide instruction in Literacy and Math in SW3 know how critical it is to prepare students for challenges of 21st century learning. They also know how important it is to engage and motivate students. Increasingly, they are focusing on delivering programs that stress knowledge and understanding but also thinking skills and application of knowledge in diverse contexts.
In your child's school, teams of educators that include administrators, teachers, specialist coaches and support staff, are all working hard to deliver programs that promote higher level thinking and inquiry-based learning through such activities as:
- research, critical literacy, questioning, inferring, extending, evaluating and problem solving.
In classrooms throughout our Family of Schools, students are being provided with opportunities to engage in tasks and activities that involve collaboration, discussion, multiple pathways of communication, technology, global connectivity and cross-disciplinary applications.
Each year, students across the province write the EQAO assessment at Primary and Junior levels. Schools use the results, in conjunction with other sources of assessment data on student learning and achievement, to strategically plan across the grades and throughout the school year. Over the last few years school boards, in response to revised Ontario Curricululm Expectations, have made a concerted effort to address higher level thinking by asking questions that require students to explain and describe how and why as well as to compare and contrast and evaluate. In answering, students must show the pathway of their reasoning and provide evidence from the text (Literacy) or an understanding of the mathematical processeses (Numeracy). It’s an exciting time to be learning and, as this Wiki will show, students in SW3 are rising to the challenge and enjoying school.
We hope that this Wiki also helps you to become more familiar with some of the exciting and challenging educational goals and practices in SW3 schools as well as provides you with a few, helpful partners-in-education resources and suggestions.
